What's your side hustle? The other day I had to get to a neighboring village, but my bicycle had a flat. It was also the middle of the day and transportation gets difficult. My solution? Find transportation. Didn't take me long to find a mini car heading in the direction I needed to go. But, instead of ferrying passengers they were transporting goods. Took about 45 minutes to leave, as every 15 minutes we kept turning around as clients found out about a car transporting goods to the next village. Things is always a hustle here. People talk about entrepreneurship and creativity, but a lot of it comes from having very limited prospects. A lone tree on the beach of Saint-Louis' hydrobask, facing the Atlantic Ocean. It's been a long time since I've posted on Instagram. Over the last few months, service has had its ups and downs. The hardest struggle of being a Peace Corps Volunteer is finding a way to stay inspired, engaged, and committed to your hobbies and intellectual pursuits. Problems come from many places - struggles at site, intense work, leisure, and the occasional existential crisis as Close of Service approaches. Either way, I'm forcing myself to post some of the images in my backlog. Well-known among my circle of friends is the fact that my family loves and cares for animals. The other night, a cat wandered into the compound and killed 4 of my brother's pigeons. He was pretty devastated, especially since there are 3 young birds now without their parents. Ergo, the solution: my mom and brother hand-feeding baby pigeons. I'd never held a baby bird before, and at least it's another thing I can attribute to my unpredictable @peacecorps experience. A woman stares at an incoming transport at the intersection between Ourissougi, Bakel and Tamba, readying herself to sell cold sachets of water to any and all thirsty passengers. The bright yellow helmet is an element of absurdity, something that I don't often find visually. It is a common hustle on the roads, but often these sellers are competing against each other for the opportunity to sell small goods at fractional margins of profit. I wonder how strained or unstrained the relationships are between people who have to sell water, fruit, or snacks to passing traffic. Are they friends? To what extent do they support each other? This is a Cashew Apple. This is also where your Cashew Nut comes from. The #fruit comes in yellow and red (with what seems like slightly different flavors), and typically they're a bit bigger than this! They're also very delicious. Sweet and slightly astringent, with a strange chaulky texture. Personally I can't get enough! Especially amazing when left in the fridge. We are looking to explore some Cashew projects here in the Bakel area.
