We are a Mac family. This week we started building a PC desktop, which has been very educational for my kids. Fifteen years ago, when I realized I would be doing tech support for everyone in my new family, I called a family meeting and laid out the pros and cons of PC vs Apple, and everyone took my advice. We switched, and everyone has had Apple phones, tablets, and laptops ever since. (The need for my tech support has been low, and everyone shares the same cables.) My kids have known nothing but Apple computers for their whole life - until this week. For his 12th birthday, Z wanted a PC gaming rig. He wanted the same processor, and monitor, and case as his favourite YouTuber. He thought it would be just as easy as Apple - buy the pieces, let them talk to each other via BlueTooth, and everything works, right? Wrong. Not with Microsoft PCs. We made this a #homeschooling project. After getting all the pieces of a used computer, we took them apart to reassemble them in his new case, learning about motherboards and graphics cards, internal fans and RAM sticks. He is learning about interchangeable parts, and this whole other perspective on computing hardware that is outside of the Apple realm. He loves it. Which is great, because I am looking forward to passing on the mantle of the tech troubleshooter in the family.
