Application: John Egbert
[x]
How old are you IRL? 22
What character are you applying for? John Egbert
Why are you interested in this character? He's a fun character to write, and he'd be a good contrast to the character I'm already playing, offering me a lot of room to play someone more socially active. And I love him.
What is your personal interpretation of this character? How would you describe their personality? John is amply honest, pretty silly, and a simple sort of guy; he has a tendency to see things more in black and white than shades of grey. Either something is awesome or it's awful, hilarious or stupid. But that isn't to say John isn't plenty friendly. He can take a lot of vitriol and shrug it off, and for the most part, he just likes making friends -- however, even John can push boundaries, and sometimes pulls pranks or say things that are a little cruel without realizing it, which is really supplemented by that black-and-white view of things. If he realizes he's done something shitty, he's more likely to own up to it than play it off, but you have to actually present it to him.
He doesn't usually dwell on his mistakes, and he has a habit of speaking out about things he thinks are ridiculous or unfair, but when there's something that bothers him or upsets him that he can't really complain about normally, he has a tendency to let it build up until the levee breaks and he has something to take his frustrations out on.
John grew up in Portland all his life, and he's had a pretty average one. Well, for anyone that lives in Portland, anyway. He has a dad that kind of annoys him, a good handful of friends, a job he likes, and at least a vague goal in mind. He's had little conflict in his life and has a tendency to take that for granted, but at the same time, he doesn't usually try to argue with anyone on their problems if they seem legitimate, either; he's a pretty good ear, even if he can't necessarily relate.
What would be your character’s major or occupation? Music major! He really wanted to look into magic as profession, but his particular brand is kind of... outdated. He still finds ways to incorporate it into his life, anyway, such as impressing the kids at the daycare he works at. They always think magic is cool.
Give a physical description of your character: John is a pretty average 5'8" and slim but lightly muscled (particularly in his arms), with slightly messy black hair that he keeps short. He's a tan-skinned mix of European and Pacific Islander descent, and the latter isn't always immediately recognized by others, but in Portland, he's experienced minimal repercussions in regards to his ethnicity. He's worn simple rectangular glasses to correct his vision about as long as he can remember, and hasn't really been interested in contacts; it's too much effort for him over a thing he doesn't really care about.
Give an example post of your character in this AU: "Whoa! Careful, dude!"
Another kid was going a little hard with the cookie dunking, and another cup of milk had toppled, right onto the lap of another unsuspecting little boy who had simply been enjoying his gummy snacks. John had been fearing an upset in this direction, with the way the little boy seemed to get a bit worked up when things didn't go his way, and already John could see his face working into the dreaded Tear Grimace.
"Hey, it's okay!" John tried to intervene, all but leaping to get the cup upright again and grabbing for a few of the paper towels on the table nearby to sop up the mess. "See? It's just about disappeared, right? Wanna see something else disappear? It'll be /totally/ cool, trust me."
Another couple seconds had him procuring a sponge ball and a pencil from nearby. "All right, check it out. See the ball?" The kid nodded, tears still in his eyes, but at least he looked curious. That was good. "I'm gonna make that ball disappear." He pretended to move the foam ball into his other hand and hid it, curling his fist around nothing but air, then offered the pencil. "All you have to do is take this pencil and tap my fist with it three times. Ready? One, two, three!" After the little one had complied, John's hand spread wide, revealing... nothing! "Crazy, huh?"
The kid was looking around, confused, but moments later, John offered his other hand and opened it to reveal the little ball right back where it had started. "It's over here now! It must be a traveler. Hehe, here you go." He offered the ball over, and while he was trying to figure out how exactly the magic ball worked, John reached to pull his chair out. "Now let's go get you changed into some clean pants, okay?"
