Application: Jack Noir (Spades Slick)
How old are you IRL? 21
What character are you applying for? Jack Noir (AKA Spades Slick)
Why are you interested in this character? I think there’s a lot of room for development on top of this already interesting character.
What is your personal interpretation of this character? How would you describe their personality? NOTE: I am *mostly* going off of the beta trolls’ version here, because no one wants Bec Noir, or worse, Jack English, trawling around in PDOC. Slick could be easily interpreted as just a guy with a thing for stabbing people, but there’s a lot more to him than that. In canon, though he has no speaking parts, he does a lot of things with various motives behind them. For example, his decision to defect from the Black Queen’s servitude and start a gang (the Midnight Crew) speaks a lot to his rejection of authority. Spades Slick is not the kind of guy to take anyone else’s crap, and he likes to be in control. If anything, he’s a strong leader. He has a penchant for knives, though not necessarily a penchant for violence; I see his perpetual stabbing of strangers as more of a paranoia. Better to kill than be killed. He’s a hardened “criminal”, doing what it takes to survive on the run from a lot of things, including the Felt on top of the Black Queen. In the Intermission, he shows that he’s definitely researched his enemy, and has come nothing less than totally prepared. He isn’t the type to throw caution to the wind and just charge in.
There are many occasions where Slick finds himself injured, but he always gets himself patched up and keeps on going. He’s not a boss; he’s a leader. Someone who gives orders, but is right there with his men until he physically can’t be anymore. He also knows how to make strategic alliances, as evidenced by the alliance he forms with Karkat in canon. While it can be easy to mistake Slick for an idiot due to the fact that he doesn’t have any actual lines in canon, if you pay close attention it’s obvious that he’s smarter than he looks. However, he sees a lot of things in black and white, not really seeing the ‘grey area’ that supposedly exists, which doesn’t mesh well with his hot temper.
In this AU, Slick would be (obviously) human. His real name is Jack Noir, and Spades Slick is a street name he picked up after defecting from the service of a notable politician who would more than likely have his head if they found him. He’s started a gang with a few other defectors called the Midnight Crew. They’re not in the business of selling drugs or anything like that, but they’ve killed their fair share of people (whether or not they’ve meant to do so is an entirely different story). He lives in a big house with the rest of the Midnight Crew, which also serves as a headquarters for them. He’s not exactly trusting of people, and he tends to shy away from revealing his real name or talking about his past at any length. Spies could be anywhere.
What would be your character’s major or occupation? He’s the leader of the Midnight Crew, and together they run a jazz club as a front for their criminal activity. Give a physical description of your character: Slick stands at about 5’9”, tall enough to be intimidating but not so tall that he’s towering over everyone else. He’s italian, with mocha skin and dark eyes. He has a chin strap that tapers nicely into a salt-and-pepper goatee, which perfectly matches his slicked-back hair. He has a scar over his left (or right? no one can ever seem to remember which) eye, which is covered up by a patch. His right (…or left?) arm is prosthetic. It can accomplish basic functions, such as picking things up or holding things or maybe even waving (or other common hand gestures…), but it is by no means deft. He’s somewhere around 40, though his true age is something he doesn’t reveal, and his age is just barely starting to show in wrinkles and sprinkles of grey in his hair.
Give an example post of your character in this AU: Not only was this kid just barely passing the strict dress code required to even be here, but he was getting nosy about pretty much everything. Slick glared down at him, his good hand thumbing the hilt of his trusty switchblade in his pocket. “Listen, kid, it’s not any of your business what’s going on in that room, much less whether or not you can go in. Scram.” His snarl would have been enough to scare away anyone in their right mind. Except that this was an impudent college kid. Instead of fear, he was met with indignance. Crossed arms, frown - the whole nine yards. Gross. "Ugh, whatever. Suit yourself." Ding. Just as the kid was about to turn and leave, Slick found himself scrambling. “Wait,” he called, internally flailing. How could he have been so stupid? This kid knew the password. He should have recognized him, but he hadn’t. But knowing the password meant you were in. ‘Cool’, so to speak. “I apologize, sir. Right this way,” Slick murmured, still caught off guard, as he ushered the vaguely confused-looking kid into the poker room, glancing around to make sure no one else was looking as he opened the door.
