I am a part of a team (@eatcho , @rudysernaredstone , and myself) that was hired by RACC to paint a mural for the Department of Community Justice building in Outer East Portland on SE 122nd Ave., near the Midland Library. It was an enormous task and came at a time when there are a lot of tensions between community and law enforcement. I am still processing all that I have learned in this time. For this project, I engaged with a number of folks affected by our Justice system. Thank you Carlos, Jose, Ben, Sal, Dawud, Talilo, Thy, and Wassila for sharing your lives through this project. They are the portraits in this mural. I will probably write a much more detailed piece about who these folks are. In this mural, these folks represent all of us. Folks who grieve lost loved one, folks who fight to see their children, folks overcoming addiction and depression, and folks who have to overcome heavy labels put upon us. “You must go through the dark to get to the light.” Today, I was invited by @menaceresa to add a bird of light (dove) to a graffiti production wall at the @hawthorne_asylum building. I was honored and intimidated to paint next to some of the best graffiti writers and aerosol artists in Portland and the country. This dove with geometric designs was what I could do in an afternoon. I hope to go back in the next week or so to add another bird to the other side of the building. Much appreciation and thanks to @menaceresa for giving me the opportunity and also showing us the inside of their bus home that they tour the country in. Their artwork is incredible. It is cool to meet a duo that are truly living an artist couple’s dream reality.
