4 ⧽. is there an au or trope that you haven't written before, but would want to try?

There are so many, but off the top of my head... I'd be thrilled to write an enemies-to-lovers story one day that takes a whiiiiile to get to the "lovers" part. It can be such an amazing dynamic when it's given the time to breathe and mature. One of my all favourite fantasy series is my holy grail for this: the main couple in Kushiel's Legacy by Jaqueline Carey who go through over 2,000 pages of relationship development (in between several epic adventures and deep political schemes). They're not strictly enemies but have a really rocky start, and their growth from there felt so natural.

8 ⧽. what part of The Red-Eyed Stranger is your favorite?

(I've been very much smothered by plot bunnies lately and haven't quite crawled out from under the pile, oops, but) I'm very excited to explore the ambiguity of Sylus' origins and intentions with our dear bed&breakfast owner. Who is he, really? What does he want? What were his early days as a hunter like? Why is he so darn handsome?? - As for what's out already, the dialogue is my favourite bit!

It's really hard to pick out, but here goes:

1. Physical memorabilia - I love collecting trinkets, especially little ceramic figurines, and taking instant film photos whenever I'm out somewhere nice. I've got a few stack of pictures organised by trip in a box and looking at them always transports me back to the moment I captured them.

2. Warm drinks in winter - it's an almost daily ritual when the weather gets cold, I find my favourite drink for the season and pretty much only make that! This year, I came across some lovely native honey infused with bits of fresh tumeric that is so fragrant and soothing. I'm up to my third jar already...

3. Everything art related, both making and enjoying it in equal measure. Creativity has brought so much joy into my life, no matter what form it takes: painting, crafting, and now writing. Life would be so much more dull without it.

4. My growing collection of handmade mugs, plates, and other crockery. I adore handmade stuff that has the human touch on it - the more misshapen and wonky, the better.

5. Embarking on random pet projects for the fun of it. Most recently, I've been learning how to make botanical dyes with flowers and dying paper with it.

3 ⧽. what's something you like about your writing?

This one's tough - I'm pretty blind to the qualities of my own work. The process of pulling an idea from my imagination and rendering it in words activates the technical side of my brain rather than the experiential/emotional, and it never switches off, even when I'm finished.

End result being that I don't feel any particular way when I'm re-reading anything I've made. It's really unfortunate, because I did start this hobby again with only one ground rule: I don't write anything I wouldn't read, and that remains true, but I've since found out... I also don't get much out of reading what I write.

ALL THAT TO SAY, any and all feedback I've gotten is therefore good as gold and my north star for knowing what the heck is going on with my stuff! To answer the question - I sincerely don't have much of an opinion on what I like about my writing, but based on all the kind things people have had to say about it, my best wager is: my sense of humour seems to click more often than not, and I do alright with establishing a particular setting or tone.

9 ⧽. tell us about a wip/idea that you're excited about!

I'm neck-deep in a vampire AU snowcrow idea that started plaguing me after I saw this fanart weeks ago. Still in the very early stages, but I've been having a fantastic time working out Zayne's side of things - him as an immortal, centuries-old vampire who reluctantly sires Sylus into his first & only thrall to save him in his dying moments.

Being a vampire is, at least in Zayne's lens, a loathsome curse. He's self flagellating, hates his own nature and eternal thirst, chronically fatigued because he exclusively feeds from expired bloodbags that barely keeps his hunger at bay and nothing more, burnt out and achy from long hours at the hospital. Ironically, despite Sylus being also at rock bottom when they meet, he'll be the one to help pull Zayne out of this hole, and hopefully they'll find some peace together after a few trials and tribulations.

(It was supposed to be just some lighthearted, fun, sexy vampire action - there'll still be plenty of that along the way - but I latched on to also piling him up with issues that need to be worked out...)

4 ⧽. is there an au or trope that you haven't written before, but would want to try?

....so I found out weeks ago about a real sport we have on Earth called chess boxing. Visualise - a standard boxing ring with a chess setup complete with table and chairs next to it. Opponents play alternating rounds of boxing and blitz chess until victory is achieved via knockout or checkmate (plus some other conditions).

IS THAT NOT THE MOST SYLUS CODED SPORT THERE EVER WAS? I really really really want to write a professional chess boxer!Sylus au. One small problem: I know nothing, zilch, zip, nada, about either chess or boxing. The amount of research and technical overhead that this calls for, even just to make it passably believable, is more than I'm mentally prepared to take on right now. 😆

10 ⧽. what genre is generally the easiest or most enjoyable for you to write? which is the hardest?

The few genres I've dabbled in aside from fluff haven't felt easier to write per se, but I love writing angst. The many tangled emotions that come with a great angsty premise are a real treat to bring to life. Hardest is smut for sure, I am too intimidated to even wade into that territory most days.

(any pick) 13 ⧽. do you have any writing projects/goals/plans you're working on/want to work on?

Very keen to write longer stuff! I'll always enjoy fleshing out a single interaction, moment, or idea that doesn't 'need' more than a ficlet or drabbles' worth to get across, but it's just as valuable to me to continue pushing my comfort zone when it comes to writing, and right now that takes the form of these more ambitious ideas and projects.

I can only answer with one trait?! This is a cruel and unusual punishment indeed... the way you have me stuck on this during my commute to work, ahhh.

Sylus is the package deal for me in so many ways - he's pretty much everything I enjoy in a character - but if I were to rummage in the bucket and pick out just one:

I love the shift in his demeanour when he's talking to strangers or anyone other than you & his little adopted family. The warmth drained from his voice, the curt and demanding tone; his tone when dealing with enemies feels like it could cut their skin, and I'll confess, it's thrilling to imagine that directed at me sometimes...
