The year was 2006. I was a junior at @nbhs_ct, still overflowing with life and dreams of one day attending #Connecticut’s beloved #Ivy. One day, a representative (recruiter?) from @yale came to talk to students who, like myself, had their sights set on attending #Yale after graduation. After making the painful choice to skip my honors Psych class to attend this particular rep’s visit, I settled down in my usual spot (second row, second seat left or right of center) and focused on the gentleman’s less-than-enthusiastic introductory spiel. Much of what he said were things that, I imagine, most of his audience already knew; I doubt I was the only one itching to hear that sweet, sweet concluding question: “Is there anything else you would like to know?” Indeed, there *was* something I wanted to know. Something crucial, something that had the power to solidify or completely destroy a dream I’d held onto for at least ten years. My hand shot up, as straight and high as my body would allow. As a lifelong aspiring archaeologist, I’d long been aware of the connection between Yale and my beloved @yalepeabodymuseum, which I had (at that time) a tradition of visiting at 1-3 times a year since I was 2. I needed to know: given the high cost of school admission, were Yale students allowed free admission to Peabody Museum? The old man made no effort to hide what was either annoyance or mild disgust. He stared in silence for a moment before saying, rather curtly, “I don’t believe so; no.” My dreams of attending Yale died that very moment. Should I, by some act of God, gotten accepted into Yale, but also have managed to scrounge up enough for tuition, I knew my chances of survival would rest entirely on unlimited, free access to my sanctuary. I would need the comfort and peace that has always come from walking #peabodymuseum’s halls; when school and life got especially difficult, I would need the Hall of Dinosaurs, the dioramas, the taxidermy displays, the glowing rocks, and the walls of artifacts to remind me why I was there, studying, rather than hidden away in some urn or resting six feet under. Needless to say, I gave up on that dream. And that rep? He was wrong. Hah. (at Connecticut) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0D9AAPJMyB/?igshid=12hpf8sp8g4i1
