Millennial problem: We don't know what we're fighting for
I had a conversation with a retired veteran today who works on my team at work. We had a good conversation about money, children and life in general. We got on the conversation of my generation. He said that this generation are "rebels without a cause, you are out there fighting, causing controversy but theirs no direction. It's like this generation doesn't even know what it's fighting for" I had a hard time disagreeing with it. I've seen so much chaos and discourse from my generation. They are at each other's throats as much as they are at the older generations throats. It's nothing but a bunch of directionless activists that can't even agree with each other. Our hearts are certainly in the right place but our heads aren't. Riots in the street instead of unity, violence instead of peaceful protest, ironic judgment and condemnation against those they view as intolerant simply for not completely agreeing with them. If we want peace shouldn't we focus on making peace with each other instead of just blaming the older generation and attacking them? Their time is almost up, we are going to be the generation with power soon and we are going to make all the mistakes they did because no one can get along. We need unity not a scapegoat.
So I’m taking a class about riots, revolts and rebellions and what we looked at today was the effectiveness of violence in creating change. We’re reading The Value of Violence by Benjamin Ginsberg and the title of the introduction is “Violence is often the answer.” In the introduction he generalizes that politicians are liars and does mention he’s been accused of being a cynic but all of his points are valid.
He first points out the issue of dominance and states that “Generally speaking force can only be defeated by force.” For this he uses the examples of Tiananmen square and peaceful protests against Gaddafi. He states that non-violent protests are successful when using the violence of the others. He uses MLK as an example for that. When protestors were attacked and the protesters did not fight back then that created the image of the police and the state being cruel and evil oppressors when pictures and video where shown in the media. He emphasizes that non-violent protest is only effective when it some how causes social or economic changes that forces people to look at it. Boycotting goods are an amazing example. Though violence could be the answer and even MLK acknowledged that when talking about Malcom X (I can’t remember what he actually said but I know he didn’t condemn him).
He then goes on to say the violence is usually what causes change. The American Revolution, The Civil War, The French Revolution, Race Riots. A reaction with violence is usually what causes change, even though many believe violence to be morally wrong.
A point I brought up in class was that really in all social and political or regime changes that there seems to be a mixture of both in all of it. It starts with boycotts and marches and picketing and then those people are attacked and ridiculed and the stakes get higher and people willing to defend them selves physically come out or the people who are willing to use violence come out because they had that little push too.
tl:dr Peaceful and violent protest has been proven to work just as effectively as the other as long as there is a support from higher up somewhere. Keep that in mind

*with incredible sarcasm* "Well if it's on the internet, it has to be true!"
Not what I said at ALL... but there are multiple sources to back me up and all that you have is what you've heard on Fox News.
Seriously, please tell me again how Mike Brown's death was justified??? Six bullets is murder, not self defense.
Or how Eric Garner's killer wasn't punished?
Trayvon Martin?
Jonathan Ferrell?
Kendrec McDade?
When the shootings stops, we stop.
Apparently yesterday there was a massive Occupy Oakland demonstration, which ended in a flavor of violence and force, which Occupy Oakland hadn't tasted. There is word that a massive police presence forcefully met with #OO's massive 2000+ non violent march. There is word of many protestors equipped with home-made shields which sum more direct protestors used to clash with police. I read that after a massive arrest of 300+ young peaceful protestors were kettled and processed, all with out the cops ever declaring "unlawful assembly" to the protestors. Also word of more experienced protestors as well as more direct ones escaped arrest and occupied city hall in a solidarity gesture.
