hello!! I don't know if you've already answered this (I'm sorry if you did, I couldn't find it!) but may I ask what made you choose Ao3 as the sit to host your romance novel on~? thank you!!!

basically it just seemed like the easiest solution!

as much as i like the idea of seeing spitfire made into a proper book, i just have no desire or energy to pursue traditional publishing. i’d have had to write the whole book first and then spend ages hunting down an agent willing to take on/shop around my book, go through a ton of revisions, etc., before MAYBE getting published.

in all honestly, if i had to do all that, i do not think spitfire would get published. i’m an untested author with no prior experience and, to put it frankly, spitfire is incredibly weird and niche and not super marketable.

i also knew i wanted to share spitfire on a chapter by chapter basis because, honestly, i don’t think i could have withstood not sharing it until book 1 was complete. i’m way too used to the near instant gratification of online publication from my webcomic experience lol.

so then it came down to a matter of where to share it. i probably could have considered some other options, but Ao3 was pretty much it for me. it’s a site i was already using that i knew allowed original content and had an active user base (even if that user base was mostly interested in fan content), and it was a place that has a very ardent freedom of content policy. 

spitfire contains explicit content and is inherently queer and gender fuck-y, amongst other things, and could easily be censored on other platforms. i actually did look at tapas as a potential host (since they do have novels now) but spitfire did not meet the content restrictions (i.e. no smut).

i already knew i wanted to post beta chapters early on patreon but i didn’t like the idea of also sharing the public chapters there since it would make organization more difficult/confusing and that was my final idea.

i guess i could have made a new tumblr blog and shared spitfire there, but i just did not want to mess with formatting a new blog here. this site is a pain in the ass lol

so it was more process of elimination than anything else tbh
