We didn't land at Plymouth Rock... or Ellis Island
The Republicans kept praising their ancestors who came over to the United States seeking freedom. Historically we know that this includes Europeans who came seeking religious and political freedom, and immigrants from Europe, Asia, Central and South America, and even other countries in North America who came for political, social, or economic reasons.
Most of my ancestors, however did not come here; they were brought here in chains. My other ancestors were already here, and were killed or removed from their land. As was stated in the movie "Malcolm X," "We didn't land on Plymouth Rock...Plymouth Rock landed on us."
Our first African American president was compared to a rowdy bar patron, a person who has never held a real job, and someone who would use profanity instead of speaking in a dignified manner. Is it any wonder that a Spanish magazine has a cover photo of First Lady Michelle Obama as a slave, or that an African American camerawoman working for CNN was pelted with peanuts on the RNC convention floor. "This is how we feed the animals," was the comment these Republicans said.
Republicans may say they want freedom, but that freedom is for their kind of people.
