Peasant Wedding, Oil on Oak Wood Painting (1568) Pieter Bruegel the Elder (ca. 1525–1569) created this Northern Renaissance scene to capture the lively atmosphere of a Flemish country wedding. Moving away from symbolic stories, he focused on the honest reality of peasant life. The guests gather in a crowded barn, where the simple meal is carried in on an unhinged door used as a platter. The bride sits quietly before a green cloth backdrop, while the groom is famously absent from the head table following local custom. Loc. Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria, since 1594.
