Peat’s dance performance of Love in the Dark

ok so i have to freak out about peat’s dance somewhere and i don’t have many friends so i’m gonna shout it into the void here ok?

i’m thinking the lights symbolize sky’s sense of safety or hope, in the dark claustrophobic but safe place he goes when he’s triggered. one of the main themes is him chasing the light. 

it begins with him running around turning the lights on trying to gather all the light he can. to build up a sanctuary for himself. he has to fight to create and get to the light, and you can see how much the light is valued and loved. 

then he leaves the safety of the lights and is hit with the turbulence of reality. he leaps forward hoping, only to be kicked while he’s down so he retreats to his safety once more.  the two lifts were done beautifully, it looks the backwards lift is longer... the idiom one step forward and two steps back.

when he goes back however he knows how to put up those walls, create that safety light again. there’s this kind of ‘i knew this would happen’ to the flourish peat does turning on his light. but this time it’s more of a prison. it seems he’s trapped alone within the lights.

and then fort appears and respects the light and cherishes sky. the light moves around and sky tries to keep track of it a beat too slow. why the light moves is perhaps because he’s not sure what to do about this new person and how it will affect his mindscape. sky catches the light but lets it go and accepts an embrace, but when he looks back where he left the light it’s gone. frantic to find it, sky lets go of prapai and they’re separated. alternatively, prapai has become the light, symbolized by the light circling around them but they’re separated because sky’s fear is too strong.

the dance ends with the dancer’s hands grasping at sky and he brushes them off with a defeated expression and goes to his light, cradling it for a moment, before his eyes lift and he extinguishes the light to the lyrics “I don’t think you can save me”. 

i’m so curious what other people took away from this performance
