OOF can i say that i took my first ever linguistics class last semester and it was taught by an anthro prof who believed in like, nothing BUT sapir-whorf. i wrote one paper responding to our textbook which talked about a south american tribe and how they were more peaceful and "in the moment" bc their language didn't have a future tense, and i said that that sounded like colonialist garbage, and my prof was like "u didn't read the text close enough" aaaand i wanted to die all semester...

holy shit. i love anthro and psych but sometimes i just want to like… push them into a ling department and just say “talk” for a bit. it’s not a debate in linguistics as far as i know.

it’s like a chemist teaching biochem and using outdated theories of evolution. it’s not really an excuse just because it’s not their expertise. if they teach it, they should use the most current theories. i mean, simplifications are fine, and maybe a 10 year lag is fine in some cases, but holy hell we’re getting close to a century after linguistic relativism was really talked about as a Thing, and i’d say people other than Dan Everett and a few other quacks have pretty much given up that ship
