Pedro Pedro
Pedro Pedro views his paintings as parodies of the still-life form. His paintings include fruit bowls, lavish spreads of food or clothes chaotically strewn about. He turns quotidian objects, such as a sock or a half-eaten sandwich, into spirited characters on his energetic canvases. The L.A.-based artist’s vibrant scenes evoke both the colorful, grotesque figurations of Peter Saul and the compositional considerations of Old Master painters. Pedro’s loose, humorous style still feels classical in nature, while everything exists in bold color the imagery remains soft in texture by applying textile paint onto unprimed linen. Pedro’s compositions of untidy things suggest the harried contemporary lives lived just beyond their frames.
