I’M SO HAPP I’M GO NNA WR ITE THE MOST CLICHE THING
————————————————————————————————
He hated waiting, but he was also patient. He thought that most people were like that, somehow. But this time Matthew had been waiting for nearly 2 hours, and it was starting to rain. He didn’t understand what was so important, WHY Gilbert was so intent on meeting outside some random cafe he’d never even heard of before.
The sprinkles had turned into rain, the smell of sunshine into dust, and the warmth of summer dulling grey. Still he remained, occasionally sipping from his 2 hour old Timmies.
Sure, Matthew was a man that never let the cold get to him. He’d go out in below 0 snow weather just to skinny dip in the ice. But standing in the rain for over an hour made him wish he was back at home, sitting in front of a warm fire. And yet he waited.
Minutes later, out in the distance you could see an albino man running desperately toward’s Matthew’s direction, his form growing clearer as Matthew realized it was in fact, Gilbert.
“I’m so sorry Mattie I am so so SO sorry. My car broke down and so I had it towed and ran the rest of the way here.” Matthew just smiled, shaking his head as he drank the last of his Timmies.
"No, it’s alright. I figured something like that happened.” Gilbert blinked, gazing at the pleasantly soaked Canadian in front of him.
“You’re…all wet.”
“Yes, that’s what happens when you stand in the rain.” Matthew walked over to a convenient trash can to throw away his cup and returned to Gilbert. Though, that comment made him feel even worse.
“Shit…I’m sorry. You waited nearly 2 hours for me and you’re still here, soaking wet.” He just shrugged as if it were nothing. It wasn’t Gilbert’s fault he had to wait so long, and in truth he realized he didn’t hate waiting at all.
“So anyway, what was so urgent that we had to meet up?” Matthew wasn’t the greatest subject changer, but when he wanted a topic change he knew how to get it.
“Oh, that’s um…” Gilbert hadn’t expected that question so soon, since now he had instantly become a flustered mess whilst Matthew stood in confusion. “Listen, Matthew…I wanted to tell you this in person.”
“Tell me what?”
“Well I thought I had rehearsed this well enough but truth is I don’t really know how to say this.” Gilbert paused, sliding his foot against the wet ground in nervousness. “Thank you for waiting for me for 2 hours. I’d say I’m surprised that you’re still here but the more I thought about it the more I realized; Of course you’d still be here! That’s just who you are. You’re kind, patient, compassionate, and you never yell at me or get angry at the mistakes I make. In fact you always tell me that you believe in me and that I’ll do better next time and I just. I love that. I love everything about you, Matthew.”
Matthew’s eyes glittered in the down-pouring rain, almost as if he were about to cry. Which if he was, he could just put the blame on the rain. He wasn’t even sure how to reply, how to look him in the eyes or even how to move. It was as if time stood still, and wouldn’t continue on until he gave an answer. When he was ready, he finally gave a warm smile.
“That’s because you’re someone worth waiting for.” With just those words, Gilbert flung his arms around Matthew in an ecstatic embrace, though he quickly reverted when he thought Matthew might be uncomfortable.
“I-I’m sorry I was just so happy to hear you say that and I-”
“Can I kiss you?” The question completely took Gilbert aback as he stared at the Canadian absentmindedly. “It’s okay if you don’t want to.” God he loved this man so much he didn’t know what to do.
“Yes!” Gilbert jumped up to reach Matthew’s height to kiss him gently as the rain lightly pelted their faces. He hadn’t expected the rain, he hadn’t expected Matthew to still be here, and he definitely didn’t expect this answer. But at the point, he wouldn’t have asked for anything less.
