hmm…was emma okay? was she?
Matt squeezed Karen’s hand as the doctor approached them. Karen studied her face as best she could, her eyes still blurry with tears.
"Matt and Karen Smith?" she asked, looking down at her clipboard to make sure.
Matt nodded slightly and his face twisted with uncertainty. Karen couldn’t bear to look. She shrouded her head in Matt’s shoulder and prepared for the worst.
"Your daughter Emma," she began.
Karen could feel herself starting to cry again. Please, please no.
"Wasn’t responding to any treatment for a while…" Karen pushed her head deeper into Matt, biting down on her quivering lip.
"But we finally got her breathing again."
Karen gasped, her tears falling onto Matt’s cotton shirt. She whimpered into his skin. Oh my god.
The doctor kept talking, something about keeping her here for a few days and monitoring her for some time, but neither of them were listening.
Matt held Karen’s head in his hands. “She’s okay, she’s okay,” he whispered. He kissed her forehead gently. “She’s alright. Karen, we're okay.”

I might do a sequel fic, but I’m planning out an AU right now, so I’m working on that.
Matt would never leave Karen though!
