Hey can you help me understand a thing about wasp and bee anatomy? I know that their stingers are modified ovipositors, but where are their genitalia in relation to it? I cant seem to find a diagram that shows both things at once. Unless they are not different structures and I'm getting confused about what an ovipositor is?
You're correct, stingers are modified ovipositors , and female insects are inseminated through a separate opening from the one they lay eggs through (though they are accessed through the same external opening). This should clear it up:
Note that these structures are also present in nonbreeding workers, with the exception of the spermatheca (sperm storage organ)! They can lay eggs, they just can't store sperm to fertilize those eggs, so they yield only males. (Not counting whatever's going on with cape bees.)
