Say the gates of Hell have to be closed from the inside and it's one of the brothers who has to do it. The other will follow anyway because they don't want their beloved brother to suffer alone. Cas, their angel, stays behind and make sure the story of the Winchesters and their love that saved the world never really dies in Heaven or on earth.
They have been gone for awhile and Cas brings himself to begin going through their belongings, talking to the boys like they are still there as he does so, making comments on some of the things he finds. He starts to wear Dean's clothes and even finds his amulet tucked in Sam's bag and wears it as well. He still wears his overcoat over it all because they once said he just isn't Cas without it. He may look strange with his over-sized clothes and a coat that looks like it doesn't really belong, but it feels like home, the closest he will ever get again anyway.
