FUCKING LOVE this book. And the author is an awesome person too
RIGHT THOUGH.
I've read it before but sometimes I re-read parts of it if I need a quick shot of really stunning prose. Like any paragraph on any page is guaranteed to be fairly breathtaking it's like this amazing adrenaline fairytale poetry and it's lush and exciting and inevitable and just... yeah. It's hard to read all in one go, honestly, it's like a heavy dessert. Valente is a really stunningly brave writer she breaks so many of the "writing rules" and it works so well, though. Like nothing has destroyed me for years the way the Stalingrad section destroyed me the first time I read it. I mean:
“I will not let her speak because I love her, and when you love someone, you do not make them tell war stories. A war story is a black space. On the one side is before and on the other side is after, and what is inside belongs only to the dead.”
I like just read it and then closed the book and laid in bed completely breathless and wrecked and emptied out and it took me two days to pick the book up again because I didn't trust the next section not to wreck me worse.
Just.
Deathless.
