Penberth, 2019
Beautiful sky this morning but it’s a frosty start to the day! #morningsky #penberth #frostymorning #cornwall (at Penzance, Cornwall)
What a beautiful crisp sunny day, happy Friday! 🌞 #sunnyday #lovewhereilive #fridayfeeling #friday #dailywalk #dogwalking #penberth #penzance #cornwall (at Penberth)
Wrasse on the rocks Just returned from a mini break to Cornwall, one of the four days was a fishing day! We travelled the short distance from Sennen Cove to Penberth, where we fished over high water for Wrasse.
It was a good day, with a total of 13 ballan and corkwing wrasse landed. Touch ledgering is a great way to catch wrasse as every bite and nibble can be felt. It also enables the bait to naturally roll around in the current amongst the rocks and kelp where the fish feed.
Another frosty start to the day #winter #january #frost #nature #penberth #cornwall (at Porthcurno)
Tempting wrasse with live hardback crabs
Location: Penberth, Cornwall | Species caught: Ballan, corkwing and goldsinny wrasse
Forget the expense of peeler crabs, save yourself some money and go gather some hardbacks.
Wrasse fishing is one of my most favorite types of fishing I like to do. With a variety of species bursting with colour, this is the closest a UK fisherman can get to fishing the tropics.
Going for the big one! Ragworm will catch you all species of wrasse, at all sizes, but to tempt a larger fish, a live crab bait will improve your chances. If you are flush with cash, simply go into your local tackle shop and buy some peeler crabs. If not, and you are lucky enough to live along a stretch of rocky coastline like me, spend a few hours hunting for small hardback crabs under rocks and kelp when the tide is on the ebb. It won't take you long to collect a good amount for a fishing trip.
Free-lined, ledgering on the bottom or dangled from a float, sit back and hold tight as wrasse hit hard.

Help the environment Collecting crabs on a repetitive basis would most certainly have an impact on the marine environment. Collect only what you need for a fishing trip, wrasse fishing is something I do just once a year, if I am left with crabs at the end of the trip, they are returned to the water. Please also remember to place rocks and kelp back as you found them. Have a good day fishing.
