LEGOs and D&D
I had faced a dilemma with my new D&D campaign. I had no minis. While this may not be a big problem for most DMs, it was a problem for me. I'm a visual person, so dungeons and layouts and minis are a big thing for me. But, since school is starting, I can't really go in-depth into map-making. So, a lot of it will be generating and occasional photoshop designing. With this tinier map, I need to do a new thing for minis.
There were two options, Reaper minis or LEGO Minifigs.
Reaper minis are mildly pricey, with the least expensive ones being around $6.99. With 3 PC minis, that could be $21. Because of the way the minis look, I'd like to get some enemies, and there are about 3 specific ones I'd want. That would bump it to closer to $35, and with free shipping, that sounds pretty impressive, but I thought I should look at LEGO before I make my decision.
Someone told me the Minifig parts would be expensive, and considering that the pre-made minis are around $4 each (IIRC), that would make a lot of sense. So, after doing some searching, I found that the most expensive part was 44 cents. I made an incredible list of parts I'd need:
Every head
Every torso
Every leg part, including the half-sized one (we do have a dwarf, after all)
A bunch of accessories, including: Weapons, Capes, Hair, and a few mugs... or the Dwarf.
lots of enemy placeholders, such as various color 1x1 to 2x2 bricks. 10 of each color and shape.
Optional 2x2 black "bases" for the Minis.
All together, ~$35, including shipping. Compared to that same amount to get 3 PCs and a set of goblins, I figure this is a nice deal considering I can work with the LEGO theme all with this purchase.
This is also great since I discovered Donjon and will probably use the dungeon generator almost exclusively now, with homemade photoshop maps every once in awhile when I have the time.
So, the purchase was made on all the LEGO stuffs, which will create a nice introductory setting for Julia and Mom. While they are asking us (Fraiser and I) questions about the character sheets and playing and the setting, they can build their minis. I dunno, sounds like my kind of intro session.
