O is for Oboe

It’s jazzy, it’s peaceful and it’s an instrument you wouldn’t label as Penelope’s secret instrument. At university she was offered to learn any instrument she wanted for extra credit and she had willingly agreed to challenge herself. Thanks to the visits to the Tracy’s residence, she already knew how to play the piano with help from Virgil who had assisted in teaching her, so she wanted to push for something more difficult. The harp had been a second option but there was something about the oboe she just fell in love with.

Thunderbird 2 stood gleaming in the English sunshine from where she was parked outside Lady Penelope’s mansion, the pilots had dropped in after a mission in the countryside and Penelope was treating them to tea and cake, Gordon followed Penelope into the study and his eyes laid on the woodwind instrument, piano music echoed down the hall from where Virgil was playing Penelope’s baby grand and Gordon grinned as his eyes laid on an object by the bookshelf. “An oboe Pen?” “I guess you now know my secret,” she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear before picking out a book she was lending to Gordon. “Do you play then?” “Yes, I was in the school orchestra and I’ve never given the instrument up.” Gordon smiled at her, “could you play something for me?” Penelope blushed, “gosh, I haven’t played for anyone for ages.” “Please?” Penelope picked up the oboe and raised it to her lips as Gordon sat gazing at her, “don’t look too amazed,” she began to play a folk tune and she tried not to smile at Gordon’s awed expression. Gordon sighed as she finished the piece, “wow Penny, you’re amazing.” “You are too kind, I haven’t played in months.” “I couldn’t tell. You amaze me every time we meet.” “Who knew you could be so romantic? Come on, I’m not living up to my host status.” Gordon walked back into the lounge with Penelope, “thanks.” “Don’t tell anyone, please?” “It will be our secret.” Virgil pushed the stool back with his foot and stood up, “where did you guys go?” “I was getting that book for Gordon,” Penelope smiled as Virgil clipped his utility bandolier back on from taking if off to play the piano comfortably, “we should get home Gordon, if that’s alright?” Gordon nodded, “yeah that’s fine. Thanks for this Penny.” “My pleasure.” Gordon kissed her hand ignoring Virgil’s chuckle, “see you soon.” Virgil waited for the front door to close behind them then snorted with laughter, “you charmer.” “Shut up,” Gordon groaned, “I don’t tease you when you flirt with women.” “That’s because I’m successful at doing it." “Successful? I’m the one who is dating Penelope.” “Oh it’s official now?” Virgil brought the lift down. “Maybe. I’ll never tell.”
