Peng!, Stereolab (1992)
Proficient dream pop with a bit of shoegaze, krautrock and Laetitia Sadler sounding a lot like Nico, Peng! was mostly indistinct and overwashed. There were a couple of sublime exceptions -namely the layered vocal harmonies and gorgeously simple chord progression on ‘Super Falling Star’ and the subtly brilliant ending of ‘K-Stars’- but there was nothing particularly groundbreaking about Stereolab’s debut.
Pick: ‘Super Falling Star’
It's part of an artwork called “Mask ID,” a campaign that’s encouraging ordinary citizens to “flood government databases with misinformation” and disrupt mass surveillance programs.
