I was up late packaging orders last night for a fresh batch of my glittering Giant Nib jewellery. Very satisfying!

I don’t mind staying up at all, and I’ve never had anyone complain about my postage costs - ever - but I know creative colleagues who are struggling with this right now. As a small business it’s important to remember this: it’s called ‘Shipping’ now (mainly thanks to eBay) but it used to be called ‘P&P’, or postage and packing, because that’s what it is. And it takes time to do it properly.

‘Cost of Sale’ is an accounting term (in the UK at least) and means ‘what it costs you to complete that sale’. Therefore you have to charge for *all* aspects of that sale - design time, materials, time to make; admin time to list it online, the photos, write descriptions; then wrapping materials, stickers, tape, time to package up and take it to post office, THEN what it costs to have it delivered. It must all be covered, or you’re getting a false reading of your profit margins!

I was thinking about this as I was wrapping. For me, every single parcel is as important as the last one, and every order matters. ✒️🖤 🖋️
