I haven’t read any Penn Warren in a few years, but when I came across this signed first edition for $10, I couldn’t help myself. I have enjoyed his poetry (two time Pulitzer winner), but haven’t read this work yet; any opinion it? I've been doing some reading on New Criticism over the last couple weeks and kept remembering this letter I bought at auction. This is a response letter from Cleanth Brooks to Charles Salaki in which Brooks confronts the notion that New Criticism bypasses historical or social aspects of a text. You can almost hear the annoyance in Dr Brooks text (though a somewhat un-unified tone if you ask me). Anyway, a fun little insight (and distraction) from my studies!
