Limited Scope of Caring

The other day my husband and I were talking about selling things for a club or school. There were some kids asking for money outside of the grocery store, but they weren't actually selling anything as part of that charity request.

Anyway when I was a kid I was in band so they would have us sell candy, typically. My parents would have me go around our neighborhood and would often drive to my grandmothers neighborhood which was nearby and sell there.

The thing is, people's scope of caring is pretty small. For instance when I was selling they would often ask what school it was for, and if it was not a school in their neighborhood, they would decline purchasing anything. It always struck me as funny because kids are kids but someone decided to not help ME out, because I lived a town over in a different school district. Kind of amusing. Like 'hey I only care about kids in a 10 mile radius, sucks for you'.

You'd have thought my parents would have directed me to name a local school to the area or something to avoid this.

Wizards in fiction created an impactful "school is cool" message when I was younger. You saw these people doing super cool things that could be incredibly useful, or even just flashy, but you knew they had to study the universe with intent for like five thousand years before they could even touch whatever that sparkly blue ball is. Examples that come to mind include Merlin from Disney's Sword in the Stone, and basically every teacher from the Harry Potter series (and from Wizard 101 as well, but I believe that's a bit less mainstream). There are lots of other examples, too. The image of the studious wizard is not uncommon. It didn't necessarily link directly to my performance in school, but the idea of grabbing a book and exploring the world with a 5'4" set of whiskers and a magical stick made me hyped as heck. I appreciated the value of education within a certain context.

Wizards in fiction also influenced me to collect sticks. I've grown out of the habit, but I used to pick up wand-like twigs frequently for roleplaying. Oh, earlier me. What youth. What sticks.

People can be a riot. History is a fun topic because there's a lot of instances of people doing weird and hazardous things, but you don't always laugh at them, because the past is riddled left and right with tragedies. Sometimes, though, the things people do, even though they're awful, are downright hilarious. It's a lot like looking at people today. I hope I can get into sociology later on.

Why Do Cats Play With Their Prey?

"There are several possible reasons why you might see a cat seemingly teasing and tossing their prey around. Firstly for a well-fed domesticated cat living in a nice clean home, finding a mouse or rat can be a rare experience. So the excitement of the chase is something that your cat wants to prolong and enjoy. After all if it wanted to it could just use it’s specialised bite to instantly kill the prey, but where’s the fun in that. After all the cat is not attacking the prey for food, so the instinct for the chase is the stronger of its emotions. Secondly, you may be watching a female cat trying to catch an animal and keep it alive to present to her young family for training purposes as mentioned above. Lastly it may be that the cat is nervous of its prey and does not wish to get hurt. This is especially true with rats, as they can give a very nasty bite. In these cases the cat is probably trying to subdue the rat until it is able to give the killing bite, which has to be administered to the nape of the neck to be sure of killing the prey outright. "
