Repost from @smithsonianmagazine TAKE OVER with @neileverosborne from May 6-11th - [2/3] - Upon my first few visits to the magical land of Gwaii Haanas one of the first people to welcome me was Guujaaw. To this day, Guujaaw has spent most his life in the inner circle of Haida culture and politics. He’s been involved in stands and challenges that sees more then half of Haida Gwaii in protective status without compromising Haida Rights or Title. These fights, and the ensuing arrangements are now celebrated as the cutting edge in reconciliation and enjoyed by people from around the world. Guujaaw simply told me he was a carver, and maybe this is so, but there is always more in a title.
