When Steve starts sleeping with Tony and Pepper, he mostly thinks it's a transitory thing (and so do they). They'll have some fun for a while, then Steve will eventually move on to a relationship of his own. Except the first time he goes on a date with someone else, both Tony AND Pepper find themselves feeling inexplicably jealous, and go out of their way to prove they want him around on a more permanent basis.
