The Perfect Binding: Best Choice for Creating Printed Learning Materials for Kids We'll explore why perfect binding is the best choice for creating engaging learning materials that spark curiosity and make learning an enjoyable experience.
Personal Project - Experimental Book Design/Book-making
Perfect binding workshop
The Grain of paper needs to be parallel to the spine. To find the direction of the grain, wet the edge of the paper. The way the paper creases is the direction it moves in.
Perfect binding binds single sheets of paper.
Make sure to add two extra pages to the back and front of the book to protect the main pages from the glue.
Drop the paper into the press and align it by using a piece of thin wood.
Tighten the press then flip over to reveal the spine.
Release the sides of the block, placing two sheets of paper on either side. press down the pages to each side and cover with a layer of PVA glue.
close the sides of the press then use your fingers to remove the excess glye.
Leave this for 5-10 minutes until fully dry.
After it is fully dry release it from the block and remove the extra pages from the front and back.
Then use a knife to cut 1 mm lines into the spine of the book. Make sure the cuts are equal distance across the spine.
Put the pages back into the press with the spine and a fingers width over the top of the block.
Place spring into the cuts, using the edge of the knife to press the string down. Then seal the cuts using glue.
Add a thin strip of scrimmage that is slightly wider than the spine. Then use a brush or your fingers to cover the scrimmage with PVA glue.
Leave this for around 45 minutes to dry completely.
Use a Creaser to mark the edges of the spine on the cover. Then turn over the cover and create two further creases 10 mm either side of the spine. This will create hinges to allow you to bind the cover to the book.
Place glue on the space between the line fro the spine and the outer crease. Make sure not to put glue on the spine itself as this may make it hard to open the pages of your book.
Place the book in the press to allow the pages to stick to the cover.
I liked this technique because it allows me to create books of a variety of sizes. It also allows me to combine different types of paper into one book. I also like how the binding method can not be seen.
Workshop
Book binding worksshop
I decided to do this workshop because I wanted to learn and explore how to do the perfect binding in a book. Although I'm still not sure what type of binding I'm going to use for my process, it will depend on how many pages I'm going to have in my book. These images show the steps I had to follow to create this technique. In the book, first I take a mountain of paper and place it in this rectangular wooden case that I don't remember what it's called, which will hold all the pages. and rotate it 360 to work on the spine of the book.
The second step was to put PVA glue with a paintbrush on all the pages, the trick to get glue was to push the papers to the right and left and the precision of this wooden tool helped the PVA to stay firmer glue. Once the glue is dry, I have to make 6 cuts with the knife craft in the column of the book where I will put a piece of thread to each cut and PVA glue, and finally an open weave cotton fabric with more PVA. What to do with this fabric is to reinforce the glue with all the pages of the book and we will let it dry for about 30 minutes. The fourth step is to go to the black and grey machine where I had to prepare the cover of the book by measuring the width and the column of the book and making some calculations, although I did not understand the reason. then paste the cover book and to finish it is to put it in the pressure machine so that it sticks well with the PVA glue and then pass it through the cutting machine to cut the leftovers of the book and thus I obtain a perfect book.

Perfect Binding Refresher
It was good being able to practice perfect binding again as it is a skill that got rusty over the summer but now I feel more confident for the future process books to bind.
