Choosing the right binding is one of the most important decisions in book printing. It affects durability, cost, page layout, and the overall reading experience.
Saddle Stitching
Saddle stitching is the most economical binding method for booklets up to 64 pages. Staples are driven through the fold line from the outside, creating a clean, lay-flat finish.
Perfect Binding
Perfect binding uses flexible adhesive to attach the cover to the book block. Ideal for paperback novels, magazines, and catalogs.
Case Binding
Case bound (hardcover) books use sewn signatures attached to a separate hard case. This is the gold standard for premium books.
Smyth Sewn
Smyth sewing stitches each signature with thread before attaching to the cover. Opens completely flat — best for art books and reference volumes.
Smyth-sewn binding lets a book lay completely flat when open. No cracked spines, no lost content in the gutter. Just clean, durable craftsmanship that lasts for decades.
Conveyor Magazine No. 6 - Alchemy
Published by Conveyor Editions — Purchase Here
Responding to the theme of alchemy, I commissioned Dinamoto develop a typeface that would undergo an alchemical-inspired transformation. The result is Conveyor Favorit, which evolves in four stages—referencing the four stages of the magnum opus, an alchemical process for producing the philosopher’s stone (a substance believed by alchemists to turn base metals into gold and thought to be the essence of perfection). Further inspired by alchemical codes and symbology, we also created a series of symbols, each representing a different article in the issue. In contrast to the contemporary typography, the rest of the issue’s design remains understated, allowing photography to come to the fore while creating a sense of balance and centeredness in a nod to the alchemical fascination with perfection. — Design Notes via Elana Schlenker.
