It's just hit me how performative the black square or circle or whatever it was for BLM was. Considering how widespread its use was, for all those influencers to use it as a show of solidarity just meant they weren't comfortable with discussion the real issue. With their friends, their sponsors. In their DMs, I bet no one was explaining who George Floyd was. Or how Breonna Taylor lost her life. You were just expected to know. Otherwise you weren't woke. And that opened a whole double door to normalizing AAVE talk with GenZ that I can't go into here.
It next time a tragedy happens. Or a violation of human rights, let's expect to answer the hard questions like "Why should I care" instead of performing a ritual like praying facing east.
