Jefferson, the politician. Owning everything one could ask for, the young aristocrat is soon confronted with envy and denial forcing him to grow up as a bitter, isolated adult who permanently tries to prove himself. After graduating university, he enters politics were he is stuck in a community of cigars, old, sweaty men and betrayal. Though intellectually gifted, he quickly realizes that all his well-thought-out plans and hard effort do not pay off at the slightest. In a world where corruption owns the upper hand, he eventually turns the table, blackmailing his way up to a reputable senator. His fraudulent eagerness lead him to a young prostitute who he escorts to spy on his opponents in exchange for money. Accepting Jefferson as his first client, the prostitute John Laurens approves to his dreadful plans. After a year of mutual benefits, they grow a whimsical intimacy, until the day John blackmails Jefferson himself, demanding more personal space and money. Feeling insulted, but impressed at the same time, the politician slowly accepts him as equal and finally they develop something that could in some way be described as friendship. However, meeting the educated, freckles courtesan has devastated consequences for Jefferson’s further life. Being introduced to John’s skilled, but strange friend Alexander, the politician grows a deep-down antipathy towards the deformed perfumer, causing permanent fights and arguments. There is something in Alexander he is highly scared of and he senses danger in the young man, fearing for John’s life. Weak attempts to bring his friend back to him fail. Expensive jewellery and layers of colourful cloths being all rejected, Thomas eventually understands that John is the only thing he cannot buy with money.
