#permanent slump

When in need, I can always find something worth posting at London label Permanent Slump.  But it does look like it’s been over a year since I last dipped my toe in the Permanent Slump pool.  From the Bandcamp page:

Love Tan are a brand new duo from Brighton, UK, formed of Ben Nightingale (B. Spanks) and Céline Doméné (Greetings from the Beloved Ghosts). On this set of multitrack bedroom recordings, they share instrumental duties with bass, drums/drum machines, guitars, keyboards, omnichord and xylophone, topped with playful French/English vocal harmonies. The songs contain a brilliant innocence that’s seldom present within today’s technological push for professionalism, echoing the twee and C-86 eras of bands like Beat Happening and The Pastels. Whether its the country classic ’I Don’t Hurt Anymore’ or the minimalist jangle pop of ’What’s The Point’, Love Tan offer a quick slice of familiar warmth whilst the world around us continues to complicate itself.

Chris Hopkins runs this label and has been apart of many its projects.

Expensive Music Band are a Cringlia, Australia (suburb of Wollongong) band. "Things to say at a barbeque" is their debut LP released by both Permanent Slump and Exclusive Culture.

I've been enjoying this release which kind of moves between Le Villejuif Underground (Nathan Roche), Wireheads and Lawrence Arabia. From those three, you probably get the idea that this can rock at times and mosey along at others.

This has the Mikey Young stamp of approval.

We'd previously posted about Barry back in Fall 2019. They had just released an excellent tape on Permanent Slump (London). The tape sold out, but now they're back with a 7" that looks to be self-released.

Proudly part of the queercore/queerpop scene, this band has evolved from its earlier sound to a more indie pop sound reminiscent of early BMX Bandits and dolewave Aussie bands like Dick Diver.

Skip to song #8.  “Running” is one of my favorite songs of 2017.  Great guitar, great chorus melody.  When I learned that Sod & the Comic Opera was a side project of The Bin Bags’ Chris Hopkins (and Permanent Slump label operator) I wasn’t surprised.  The Bin Bags have a knack for great songs.

Sod & the Comic Opera is a bit more lo-fi and at times experimental than The Bin Bags.  At times I can hear the noodling of Deerhunter or Ariel Pink.

This is a cassette only release.  Sod & the Comic Opera (and Permanent Slump) are both based in London, England.

I’ve been plotting the perfect time to post about Infinite Men since I bought their CD at the same time I bought the new Bin Bags CD from Permanent Slump.

Now’s the time.  Listen to this - you’ll hear post-punk/pop, and you’ll hear punk, and finally you’ll hear noise.  Permanent Slump has reissued this early 2010′s London band. 

RIYL:  Wire, Art Brut, Talking Heads (listen to some of the vocal delivery) and of course Sleaford Mods.

2/16/17.

I enjoyed The Bin Bags CD released last year on Permanent Slump.  One of the main cogs in The Bin Bags is Chris Hopkins.  And I think he also runs Permanent Slump.   This is the new Bin Bags CD “Nappy Valley”.  It has a sound and a feel that combine so many of my favorite bands - Teenage Fanclub, Euros Child, Richard James, Dick Diver and The Bats.  And listen to the last song “Spritzer” - it brings to mind the mid-80s sounds of The Feelies.

Speaking of Dick Diver, the credits mention on Al McKay as a guest guitarist.  I’m pretty sure Rupert Edwards and Al McKay (from Dick Diver) aren’t in Australia.  This might very well be Al here on the Nappy Valley CD.

The Bin Bags are a London band and Permanent Slump makes their home there too.
