I'm curious as to what Gloria's Nate looks like, if you've drawn him ever before?
i haven't! deliberately, as part of the themes n such. the big thing with nathan, and jennifer, is that the little we see recollected of them in the story may not necessarily be complete pictures. not to say that nate was a bad husband, by any means, but that he's kind of been divorced from the context of his own life, if that makes sense. what we here of him from gloria are the rose-tinted memories of a recent widow. it's part of why the whole series is called unmade man, that applies to nick, but to nate also. i have a lot of thoughts about what he was like, but the story is better if he remains hard to pin down. but the concrete facts we know about him are
he and glori met on a field trip when they were both 17. he's originally from palm springs. some months later, he drove three thousand miles to boston to show up at her door to ask her to be marry him from outside the window. he got the wrong address and accidentally proposed to gloria's cousin, madeline. glori found out about the gesture when madeline called her, crying. glori thought this was absolutely hilarious
when gloria was undergoing treatment for stage three breast cancer, her doctor pulled nathan aside to discuss submitting her for a lobotomy to 'improve her outlook' as only his signature was needed. nathan found the idea horrific and refused outright. this was considered unusual for the time
he was a bank clerk. he got gloria a job at that same bank to try and pull them out of their horrific debt. nate was bullied at work by the other men for 'letting' glori dye her hair and talk back to him
the minute he woke up in the future, he immediately set out to seek help for gloria and was killed unceremoniously by the wildlife
