I love playing the game What If They Were a Person of Color and was thinking primarily about Perry Miller as the prime option for exploring non-whiteness in the Emily series.

I feel like Teddy is the default because of his ambiguous olive skin but Perry’s life fits it so much better. Not only does he have a sea-faring father, but we also know NOTHING about his mother (and in a series where the maternal line is paramount—Emily, Ilse, and Teddy all have mothers who vividly impact their lives), suggesting none of his friends know anything about her—he might not know anything about her—and so she might not even be Canadian. I’m guessing he would be multiracial, part South/Southeast Asian and West Indian/Caribbean.

Emily Starr herself has potential as a white-passing biracial. Douglas Starr could very easily have Black or Indigenous origins to add to the Murray’s prejudice against him. (Yes this is pure self projection but hey! Why not!)
