[ SAFETY ALERT ] Tumblr, what's in your personal care products?
How much do you know about the stuff that's in your shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, soap, toothpaste, and makeup?
Did you know that cosmetics companies aren't required by the FDA to comply with reasonable safety measures (except those the industry sets for itself) such as safety assessments and recalls, and that they're not even required to fully disclose all their ingredients?
For example, look at some of the bottles you have in your bathroom. How many of them list "fragrance" as an ingredient?
Now, how many of them tell you exactly what chemicals "fragrance" is made up of? It's just one of the many things these companies aren't required to tell the consumer.
You don't have to be paranoid or obsessed with being green to be worried about this. There are a ton of chemicals that are banned in personal care products in Canada and Europe that are still permitted for use in the United States (I can't say how applicable some of this is for you Tumblr users from other parts of the globe; I'm sorry! ;; )
This is something I've been more and more concerned about lately. If it bothers you too, here are a few steps you can take:
1. Know what's in your products!
This can seem almost impossible, considering the amount of stuff in every day products (not to mention the crazy spelling/pronunciation of half those things); but there's an easy way to check the safety level of your favorite products. This website right here: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ Just enter the name of the product, and it will bring up a safety report showing you exactly what you're dealing with. If your product isn't there, you can add it yourself! 2. Support the Safe Cosmetics Act!
Provisions of the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 include:
Phase-out of ingredients linked to cancer, birth defects and developmental harm;
Creation of a health-based safety standard that includes protections for children, the elderly, workers and other vulnerable populations;
Elimination of labeling loopholes by requiring full ingredient disclosure on product labels and company websites, including salon products and the constituent ingredients of fragrance;
Worker access to information about unsafe chemicals in personal care products;
Required data-sharing to avoid duplicative testing and encourage the development of alternatives to animal testing; and
Adequate funding to the FDA Office of Cosmetics and Colors so it has the resources it needs to provide effective oversight of the cosmetics industry. For more information, see here.
3. Be educated! Read up on toxicity in cosmetics and other personal care products. Dig up articles, find studies, read books. Make an effort to purchase products that both work well and are better for you. 4. Spread the word. Share this information with your family and friends. Spread it around your online communities. Post up links to articles on Facebook. Reblog this message, or write up your own here on Tumblr.
