Viewpoints Industry TV on Why Backing Up is Best for BYOD Policies
Many companies are adopting a bring your own device (BYOD) policy in which employees can use their own personal digital devices for work purposes. While it seems like a good idea, Viewpoints Industry TV reminds readers that it can backfire.
Employees who use their own devices for work may find that when they leave that employer, all data can be wiped from the device – remotely. Employers that wish to secure their data often “clean” the employee-owned device of everything – contacts, apps, photos, games, music and more. According to data protection firm Acronic Inc, twenty-one percent of companies perform remove wipes when a worker quits or is terminated.
As more employers expect workers to be available 24/7, they don’t always provide company equipment for it. That leaves employees feeling like their personal and professional lives are intertwined and that they have to use personal equipment for work. It also means they could possibly lose all personal data in the device.
Viewpoints Industry TV offers some suggestions for preventing the loss of all data on personal devices used at work:
Remove the SD card and upload all personal data to another device, laptop or tablet before turning in a resignation.
If you think you might be terminated, do the same as above and do not download anything else.
Decline to use personal devices when working “on the clock”.
Decline to work after normal business hours for your position unless it is an emergency.
BYOD policies are meant to be convenient and efficient for the employer. They more than often back fire on the worker. The best rule of thumb is to back up all personal data before and during employment where personal devices are used.
