This is such a deeply adolescent mentality and sentiment to have. While I can agree that I much prefer the humans I can engage in deep and thoughtful discussion with, small talk is how we get there. The person that shared this is so completely unwilling to engage in small talk that she will not talk to you unless you somehow guess the random deep topic that’s going to catch her fancy atm. And while I’ve had several “deep” conversations with her, I know nothing of who she actually is. You know someone truly through the kaleidoscope of things that can be discussed via a simple “what’s up?”. It is through small talk that we discover the little things like parts of their daily routines, favorite foods, comfort shows, if they dislike going shopping, what their dogs name is, and if they have siblings. If you find small talk so abhorrent that you think less of the people who engage in it and refuse to do so yourself your missing so many opportunities to turn “crazy weather we’re having huh?” into sharing stories of childhood rainstorms that helped shape who we are today. Way too many people have this view that small talk is some sort of nicety to endure rather than the intricate gateway to connection that it is.
