Also after replaying Xillia and after looking at IMDB extensively I’m starting to think that that post from a few months ago that went “Stop hiring the people from Critical Role and bring in some new talent!” was operating in bad faith.
I’m saying this mainly because 5 of the voice actors from Critical Role’s first campaign are in Xillia. You’ve got Sam Riegal as Jude, Matthew Mercer as Alvin, Liam O’Brien as Gilland, Travis Willingham as Gaius, and Orion Acaba as Ivar. This game came out in 2011, which predates Critical Role by several years (2015).
But then you look at everyone’s voice acting credits and it’s like…..are they hiring “the Critical Role people” because of their work on Critical Role, or are they hiring them based on their extensive body of work.
But then on top of that, probably the most famous game Ashley Johnson is known for is The Last of Us. But most of her work…..is live action acting. Given that the post in question was exclusively about voice acting, this presumably doesn’t necessarily apply to her, and is more applicable probably to a handful of people that work on Critical Role.
So like, how much of a problem is it that Matthew Mercer keeps getting hired for stuff? Or are we also mad about Sam Riegal or Travis Willingham? You guys do know they were known for other stuff before Critical Role, right? Like before Travis Willingham was a Critical Role Guy, he was Roy Mustang from Full Metal Alchemist.
I’m saying this mainly not necessarily as a CR fan or even a fan of these voice actors in particular. It just seems very odd to me that when something like Critical Role that is clearly a homegrown IP gains prominence in the media landscape that all of a sudden you start reading these weird PSAs implying that the only reason the Critical Role VAs are getting work right now is because of their fame from Critical Role, and not because they’ve been working in the industry for decades.
More pointedly: are you mad a handful of voice actors from a DnD podcast are getting work you feel is unfairly given to them because of said podcast, or are you mad seeing their name in a long list of acting credits on the video game or tv show you’re currently obsessed with?
