Day 29 Intro Womanism 101 . . . Day 27 & 28 introduced #1&2 of my Big 4 Philosophers that have helped me create the framework for my #HipHopWomanism praxis. 1. Toni Morrison “Sites Of Memory 2. Zora Neale Hurston “Memories Within” 3. Dr. Emilie Townes “Fantastic Hegemonic Imagination .... This idea is so important to a conversation abt #HipHop & Womanism because I am acknowledging that the story we know of hip hop is told through a patriarchal Lens and that is fantastical and often not rooted in whole facts. Considering hegemony and imagination in a conversation in hip hop is necessary in order to wholly know #HipHop. . . . Day 28 Intro Womanism 101 . . . In Day 27 I introduced the idea that I have a BIG 4 Philosophers that have added to the construction of my #HipHopWomanism ideology and framework. 1. Toni Morrison “Sites Of Memory.” 2. Zora Neale Hurston’s “memories within.” . . . If I am to suggest that #HipHop lyrics are sacred text then I must also be asserting that whoever we are being is a manifestation of some “memories within” telling a story (or sometimes giving a prophetic warning, as I do believe that hip hop is the prophetic language of the Afro future). Zora Neale Hurston is also necessary to my Hip Hop Womanist work because her ethnography was always black focused and language focused and I believe #PreachEb is an anthropological work in the same way that documenting the specific dialect of Eatonville, Florida was for Zora. 🖤 Day 28 Consideration - Add “Their Eyes Were Watching God” to your reading list and make it happen in 2019. Day 27 Intro Womanism 101 . . . #ToniMorrison delivered a lecture years ago that mentioned the idea of “The Sites Of Memory.” She insists that our memories have a living and breathing location and we have to use our imagination to access many of them. It’s also valuable to note that we MUST visit these sites if memory to be able to tell our whole stories as descendants of slaves in America - otherwise the telling of our history will always being with slavery. And we can’t even access those whole stories without our imagination so we can enter into the interior life through the spirit by considering the “Sites Of Memory.” || This matters to my #HipHopWomanism Because the story told most often of hip hop is not even actually the story of hip hop. One such example is the fact that I’m going to say a name of the person who started hip hop and you’re going to tell me you’ve never heard of her... and I’m going to say... My point exactly... . . . Day 27 Consideration: Research Cindy Campbell. Then consider what it would look like to go to the site of the memory of how hip hop began and reimagine the story with this black woman at the center. . . . Day 25 Intro Womanism 101 . I have included this important question raised by Dr. @revdrmonica Coleman for this #HipHop portion of an Intro to Womanism because I believe #HipHopWomanism and the conversation I am having on this topic is largely introduced in her book “Ain’t I a Womanist, Too: Third Wave Womanist Religious Thought.” Dr. Coleman cites Sojourner Truths famous speech in 1851 “Ain’t I A Woman” and notes that the question was a critique of the default understanding of womanhood. Similarly, within religious thought, this book critiques certain conversations happening at the time around the understanding of Womanist (the sociopolitical) praxis and Womanist theological praxis. “Ain’t I a Womanist, Too?” I am not asking a different question from Rev. Coleman when I ask, “Ain’t I A Hip Hop Womanist, Too?” I’m just asking a specific question within the one she has raised already. I note this here because in the same way I’ve credited Joan Morgan, Aisha Durham, and Queen Latifah with the construction of my theological truth and my methodology as an activist... I also give Dr. Coleman praise for asking then, and now, where does THIS specific version of who I am being/becoming fit into this important Womanist discussion? For me, Hip Hop as my first language also forces that consideration as well! . Day 25 Consideration - Read “Ain’t I a Womanist, Too: Third Wave Womanist Religious Thought” by Dr. Monica Coleman . Day 23 Intro Womanism 101 - Hip Hop Womanism: I often credit Jay Z with my ethnographic inquiry of hip hop lyrics and other sacred text because “Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?” But lets be clear, my grandmother and Aisha Durham, author, scholar, self proclaimed Hip Hop Feminist, and Professor has certainly led the way in holding space for academic discussion of hip hop culture and the ways black women navigate in the creation and participation of this space in a way that is whole and sound for our full selves. . . . Day 23 Consideration is to add Aisha Durham’s “Home With Hip Hop Feminsm” to your reading list. She is a brilliant scholar and a thought leader in contemporary feminist discussion. Period. . . .
