I know it’s the nature of the beast that the falls in cases will slow down, but I was feeling pretty optimistic about case numbers last weekend and now it feels a bit like cases are stagnating.
Saturday tends to be a lowish day for cases, and today’s case rate isn’t even the lowest day so far this week (that was Tuesday). Last Saturday (16th), there had been a drop of ~19k cases in comparison with the previous Saturday (9th). This Saturday (23rd), there’s been a drop of about ~8k cases since the 16th.
So, it’s good things are going in the right direction, but we need things to speed up. Hospitals are overwhelmed. Over a thousand people have died every day since the 10th. And we’re struggling to get cases down to even the levels we were seeing in November.
I know this is massively pessimistic, but I’m scared. I’m scared that no matter what, we’ll start lifting restrictions in February (I know they’re saying now they won’t, but I bet we’ll see it). And cases will still be too high- we’ll see another exponential surge, and we’ll lockdown far too late again, and we’ll see tens of thousands more lives unnecessarily lost.
I keep thinking back to October, and wondering how much of this we could have prevented with that hard lockdown two week circuit breaker. Maybe it wouldn’t have worked, but it hurts that we’ll never know.
