are there any smaller animals that are safe/responsible to keep in a household with a cat? i love my kitty, and i'd love to have more pets, but of course never at the expense of their wellbeing!
Cats are predatory by nature. There is no small animal that you can allow to have interaction with a cat without the cat viewing it as a potential toy / meal. However, that doesn’t mean you should bar yourself from having smaller animals, completely!
Any smaller animal should be perfectly fine so long as they are not allowed direct interaction with the cat and are kept in a well-secured cage which remains a suitable distance from the cat. ( This is especially true for rodents; being prey animals, the mere company of a cat, however docile, can stress them. )
Your easiest bet would be to keep the smaller animal in a separate room entirely. This ensures a happy, free-from-cat-induced-stress environment for your little guy, as well as helping to prevent any unhappy incidents from occurring! If you don’t have a separate room, then maintain careful supervision over the smaller animal, and don’t ever allow interaction between the two.
This is true for any and all reptiles, amphibians, fish, rodents and birds, regardless of whether the cat is aggressive or not!
