Guinea Pig Food Guide!!

Have you ever wondered what a guinea pig can and cant eat? While most things are just a google search away, sometimes its nice to just have it all in the same place. So here, a guinea pig food guide.

Disclaimer: I am not a professional vet of any kind, just someone who has done a lot of research on guinea pig diets, and I have owned my two girls for over a year now. PLEASE let me know via DM if anything here is wrong, I don't want to hand out incorrect information.

Unlimited Buffet

There are two things that you should give your guinea pigs all the time: Water and grass hay.

Water

Water is very obvious. You can provide water in a water bottle or bowl- Water bottle are usually better since they cannot be knocked over or fallen into, so I would only use a bowl if your pig refuses to use the bottle. See the Vitamin C section for information on Vitamin C drops.\

Hay

Fun fact: A lot of people get "hay" and "straw" mixed up. The main difference is that hay is for eating, and straw is for bedding.

Western timothy hay is the most common hay fed to pigs, and orchard grass is also completely fine!! (Only give alfalfa hay to pregnant pigs and pigs under 6 months old.) More Info on the Oxbow website. Oat hay is okay in blends or moderation.

I personally feed my pigs the Oxbow Timothy & Orchard Blend. Best of both worlds!!

Side note: If you are sensitive to the dust in hay, Orchard generally has less dust than Timothy.

Hay mostly serves the purpose of grinding down their teeth (Guinea pig teeth are always growing! Their front teeth will grind against each other, which files them down. The hay is for their molars, which have no other way of being shortened. Teeth that are too long can cause all sorts of problems.) Its also their main food source along with pellets and greens.

Pellets

Pellets are important enough that you shouldn't leave them out of a pigs diet. Usually a tablespoon of pellets per adult guinea pig per day is recommended. If you give them too much, they may become overweight. I wouldn't suggest free feeding, especially if your pigs like to eat when they aren't hungry.

Treats

Treats are something that should be given in strict moderation. I often give my pigs treats after a nail cut or vet visit, or once or twice a week when they are looking particularly cute! Keeping in mind what kind of treats are already in their cage, one treat per pig a day is usually a good bet.

Sometimes I give my pigs strawberry or carrot tops as a treat! the leaves are healthier for them than the actual food, and they are going to be thrown out anyways.

Do not feed your pig chocolate or other dairy products (Yogurt drops are horrible for them!). More that they cannot eat at the bottom!!

Vitamin C

An important thing that you've probably heard over and over about guinea Pigs is that they cannot produce their own Vitamin C. Its true, and its important to think about! Opinions on how much Vitamin C a pig should get per day seem to be wildly varied to me. Some people say they need no extra Vitamin C because they get all they need from vegetables like bell peppers- and some people believe that extra Vitamin C tablets or drops are very necessary. Really, I think it depends on your pigs diet. Think about all the treats you give them, and all the veggies. If you give them a lot, then yeah, you might not need to spend money on extra Vitamin C. But if you don't give them a lot of veggies, I might suggest some extra. Its something that very much depends on your pigs.

There is a way you can give your pigs vitamin C that is a liquid drop that goes into their water- This can be helpful so you don't have to remember to give them a treat everyday. However, if you do decide to go this route, monitor how much water your pig drinks in the next few days. Sometime the drops can make the water taste odd, which can lead to your pig not drinking as much as they should. Treats are better in my opinion because you can better monitor how much they have, but both have pros and cons.

There are a lot of veggies and herbs that can be given to guinea pigs! It provides vitamins and enrichment for them, so giving something everyday can be very good for your piggies!! Heres a list of lots of things guinea pigs can have!!

Hi guys, so I thought I would make this post. I wanted to go over some things I see a lot online about guinea pigs and I thought, what the hey. I should probably share some of this stuff here. Cause I think its important. 

Guinea pigs need access to hay 24/7.  Because they require so much hay it might be in your best interest to find a feed supply store that you can go to locally. As they get big bales of hay for reasonable prices. For me I get a 50 pound bale for about $20(CAN) bucks that lasts between 4-6 months. Mattering on if we share it with other local pet owners. Also when your guinea pig is a baby and under 6 months it needs Alfalfa hay. Also pregnant or nursing guinea pigs need alfafla hay as well. Guinea pigs after 6 months eat: Timothy, orchard grass, or bluegrass hay. P.s. If you are concerned the hay you have is going bad, google it. Some of the sighs are hay smells different, the color is fading etc. 

Guinea pigs also require fresh veggies everyday. Not frozen, dried or canned.   They need to be fresh. 

Guinea pigs need also there pellets per day. 1/8 - 1/4 cup per pig. (Brands vary on this measurement). Please Stay away from food with seeds or nuts or fun colors, dried fruit etc. You want plain “Boring” looking food. The fun stuff comes when you give them fresh fruit and veggies. If you opt to get them treats, make sure the treats are also “boring” in color.  Oxbow is a good brand - and they do carry treats.  Also if you wanna go down the more natural route I would honestly suggest sticking to fruit like apples, berries, grapes etc.   

Stay away from milk products as well for treats and food.

Nail care: Guinea pigs nails grow forever and there nails will curl. My best advice would be to invest in a good nail clipper. If your anxious about doing it yourself though, or you need help. Take the cutie to a vet who specializes in tiny pets and have them show you how to do it. Or just pay for this to get down every couple of months.

Vets: Its important to find a vet in your area who can provide care for your piggy.  You need an exotic vet.

Vitamins and supplements.  Firstly - stay away from salt licks. There not necessary.  As for vitamins or supplements - I really think this is something a vet should direct you to do. However I do know Oxbow has really good vitamin c tabs. 

Figure out your bedding.  And research about the upkeep you need to do. Some people use fleece, other go for paper bedding.  Some people do both. These each have a bunch of pros and cons.  

Make sure you buy at least two piggies - guinea pigs are social animals. They like friends. Guinea pigs who don’t have friends can often deal with depression and other issues.   Also with the social piece make sure you have the guinea pigs housed in an area that gets a lot of foot traffic. 

Before you bring them home you need the following: A cage, bedding, two hides, hay and a hay “hooper” of some kind. (piling it in the middle of the cage works, btw) a bowl for veggies and pellets. (I find there pellets can get soggy so I do two different bowls.) a water bottle.  

For cages - be aware pet stores don’t always sell the right cages for pets. Guinea pigs included. And just because a cage is pricey doesn’t mean its the best.  Also be careful not to buy something with height. Guinea pigs need length.  As piggies get older they often stop climbing & some will refuse to climb. Some people do home made C&C cages or even wooden cages. However if neither of these interest you,  there is also a store bought cage. It’s called midwest. Here is the link. you can find these on amazon and some bigger pet store companies do sell them!   

Don’t buy a leash. Its bad for their backs.  Guinea pigs have really delicate bones that can break easily. 

Stay away from hay “Balls”. Like This , They do look interesting and pretty, but guinea pigs can get there heads caught in those things.  Pet death can also happen.  :(

Don’t bathe a guinea pig, or make them “Swim”. There’s youtube videos ontop of youtube videos of this kind of stuff and its not okay. Guinea pigs don’t swim in the wild and it creates a lot of distress for them. And guinea pigs aren’t able to tell us “don’t do this.” They aren’t like cats or dogs, they aren’t going to turn around and hiss or bite us.  Often times guinea pigs freeze as a response to fear.  Also if you do need to wash a piggy, use small pet shampoo. (Not human shampoo, not dawn.Not dog or cat shampoo, or flea shampoo.) and make sure the water is only up to their belly, and do not wash their face or head area. People will sometimes bathe piggies if one is dealing with diarrhea or has created a huge mess on himself etc.  Guinea pigs don’t need to be bathed unless there is problems or its directed by a vet.  Guinea pigs are like cats - they self clean. 

Guinea pigs with other animals: Please be careful if you have other pets in your house. Cats can harm guinea pigs and doggies can play a bit too rough when you have your piggy out for floor time. Please ensure your piggy stays in a room away from dogs and cats. If you have animals like bunnies - please don’t house a bunny with a guinea pig. One kick and the piggy could be seriously injured or worst. Try to keep the pets apart from one another. I don’t mean to sound like a jerk - I’m just trying to be honest.

Lastly, guinea pigs lives can last to about 8 years.  This is something thats important to think about - if you are planning on moving down the road in 2 or 3 or even 4 years its something to think about.
