Colorful PET Lamps by Alvaro Catalán de Ocón
The pollution generated by plastic bottles and containers we use every day is a problem that effects us on a global level. Renowned designer Alvaro Catalán de Ocón decided to develop a project to tackle this very problem through environmentally concerned design solutions.
On a visit to Colombia, the Spanish designer devised an idea to convert objects with short and specific lifespans into a product: His PET lamp collection, Reused discarded plastic bottles are transformed with the help of local textile techniques.
We found a nice example of these lamps in setting at Salvage, a small Milanese restaurant that is part of a social project by designer Francesco Faccin, involving a group of inmates turned woodworkers.

The Pet Lamp Project was presented at the Milan Furniture Fair 2013 for the first time. The project leader Alavaro Catalan de Ocons put the spotlight on the environmental impact of plastic bottles. The project combined artisan handcraft, design knowledge and textile tradition in Colombia to develop and produce these very unique and beautiful light objects.
´Colombia, thanks to its enormous cultural wealth, has been the perfect place to develop the first phase of this project. Thanks to the advice of Artesanías de Colombia and to the patronage of Coca Cola, in August 2012 we returned to Bogotá, where we created a workshop of artesans from Cauca who had been displaced by guerilla war.Seen from a distance, for its logical complexity, it seemed like an impossible task. However, a big part of the magic of this project has been to see how a puzzle of seemingly infinite pieces was put together until finally it was presented in the marketplace for the first time at the Milan Furniture Fair, 2013.´ Alvaro Catalán de Ocón, Product designer, Madrid, April 2013
