This is a response to this great prompt by @octopus-reactivated. Thank you for the inspiration! 💐

Lydia walked sleepily down the staircase, aiming for coffee. Coriander was already dressed and awake. He was crouched down on his pillow and was busily writing on something on the floor.

“Good morning, love.” Lydia said. “What are you up to?”

He looked slightly nervously up at her from underneath his bangs.

“It - it is a magazine. It came in the mail and it is for pets. Was… was it all right for t-this pet to use it?”

“Of course! I’m glad you did.”

When the coffee was ready, Coriander had gone out to the garden to see if there were any strawberries that had reddened during the night. Lydia thought with satisfaction that Cory really was making a lot of progress, daring to take his own initiatives and everything. She metaphorically patted herself on the back, he was really improving.

She picked up the glossy magazine with idle curiosity. It was wrapped in a paper jacket with an offer for a subscription. On the front page, in round, colourful, friendly-looking letters was the title: “PetPaper”.

The cover image had three young boxies, two male and one female, sitting in a wicker basket on a green lawn, looking smilingly up into the camera. They all wore leather collars and cutesy velour jumpsuits with hoods with ears. One of them was dressed like a bunny, one like a brown dog and the third like a cat.

The headlines of the articles ran:

“Advice for getting an autumn pet.”

“Pros and Cons of allowing your pet human food.”

“15 ways to discipline your pet that helps keep you fit.”

“Which whip to choose - in-depth review.”

Feeling faintly sick, Lydia turned over the magazine without opening it.

On the very last page was a picture of a happy female boxie on a leash waiting outside a fruit grocers on a sunny day, the dotted line clarified that it was meant to be cut out and tacked to a wall. The other half of the page was filled with a simple cross-word puzzle that Cory had solved. It spelled out the word: ‘Companion’.

The question for the second to last letter was: What are happy pets? (8 letters) with the answer pre-printed to explain the exercise: “Obedient”.

The very last question said: What do bad pets deserve? (4 letters).

Cory had filled it in with blue ballpoint ink in his neat, rounded handwriting: “PAIN”.

Okay but surely Pet Paper’s got pet models to pose for pictures in their magazines/newspapers.

I mean, I just snatched this bad boy off of Pinterest (link to the actual site, CW for partial nudity (waist-up) and like maybe restraints?? I dunno), but I’ll bet those positions are coveted. Every self-respecting owner wants to get their pet on the cover of (or inside of) Pet Paper, but very few pets ever do.

Anyway, I don’t know why but Pet Paper’s a magazine in my mind? Because of that, I decided to make a cover for this month’s special edition! (Because I know they crank these things out weekly, but I don’t doubt there’s a special edition every once in a while where they include owner submissions or hold “cutest pet” contests for whose pet gets to be on the cover.)

Not all of us became pets to escape a bad time, it's been known as a stereotype that all pets were "failing at life" before signing up for this life. But not only is this absolutely wrong, it can also be harmful to both humans and pets

"Failing at life" as many humans (and surprisingly some pets too) say, it's not exactly a thing you can do, how can you "fail" something as ephemeral and innate as life itself, it's harmful for pets who get unjustly punished by uninformed owners for choosing this path in life, as easy as it may seem, being a pet isn't always a ride at a park, with the rise of pet abuse cases why would someone choose this over failing an exam? Or a failed relationship?

You gotta add the fact that many young humans also get harmed by this stereotypes, humans aren't suited to be pets, but many of them get pushed into the pet industry by their pairs because they don't deem them as "functional or useful enough for society", leading to incorrect training they weren't born for.

And it's the same on the other side, many pets have to live as humans cause they are "functional" enough, they get taught that being a pet is wrong, that pets are lazy and worthles, and that makes them feel ashamed of what they are.

Being a pet isn't something you can determine, it's just the way we're born, and signing up for training is the most reasonable thing for pets like itself, it can barely remember it's life when it pretended to be human, it attended a good school, it had good grades and lots of friends, but that wasn't the life for it, it always knew that it was different from its friends, so it decided to sign up and it's new life couldn't be better. So I humbly ask you, stop stereotyping pets, and let's just live the lifes we were meant lo live.

Pet Paper: What are "Pet influencers" and how did they become so popular?

Celeste Haymitch (known on social media as @thatpetshowgirl) is one of many self proclaimed "Pet influencers" you may have seen taking over your social media over the past few months.

In late May 2021, Celeste posted a video of her pre-show routine preparing her lapdog Juniper for an upcoming Pet Show. It received over 1 million views launching her into PetTok stardom overnight.

"It was absolutely insane. It was like, that kind of thing happened to other people, not me. But then, it did happen to me," Celeste said in an interview with PetPaper.

Since then, others have started making their own videos featuring their Pets, from TikTok trends to educational videos on how to properly discipline, Pet related content is now flourishing across multiple platforms.

"The community was already there, i'm just glad I helped people discover [PetTok] and Pet showing in general. It's such a rewarding hobby, i'm happy that I get to share it with such a wide audience now," Said Celeste in the same interview.

Others have raised concerns about how these videos could encourage people to purchase Pets before they're ready. @edgyceruleanneoham on Twitter said:

"honestly this whole "PetTok" thing is kinda concirning[sic], like ppl are gonna think that having a Pet is all fun and games when it's actually a lot of hard work. it isn't all blue ribbons and rainbows"

To which Celeste responded:

"I never showed anything other than the truth, it's hard work yeah, but it's also super rewarding and totally worth it. And it all depends on what kind of Pet you get. I don't see any harm in making fun and educational little videos with my Pets,"

Whether you love them or hate them, one thing is for sure, Pet influencers are here for the gold.
