Celebrating All of Our Pets (Even Roosters)
In honor of National Pet Week (first full week of May), we searched our Digital Collections for pet photographs and found a special rooster. Sally Graner of Minneapolis received a chick for Easter in 1939. Months later, the rooster was enjoying his life as a pampered pet in the Graner household.
Marvin's Guide to Responsible Pet Ownership
Are you in the market for a new critter companion but don't have the faintest clue where to start? We recently talked to Marvin down on Aborn and Saint Clair who has so graciously shared some tips and tricks to get started on your journey bringing a new friend into the family.
Tip number 1: If you're in the market for a pet that's pretty, has a big personality, and doesn't need to be taken out for walks, Marvin has the suggestion for you! Betta fish (also known as Japanese fighting fish) are popular first pets known for being low maintenance. But don't let that fool you! Marvin highly recommends keeping a Betta in a 10 gallon tank with plenty of live plants to help with enrichment. This is going to be their forever homes after all. Marvin also says that it might be a good idea to regularly test your water, and wants to remind people not to keep two male Bettas together! Tip number 2: Are you worried about leaving your furry friends home alone for prolonged periods of time? Worry no more, Marvin knows a guy! Darwin, the pet-lovin' ghost is always available FOR FREE, especially considering his unique ability to be at multiple houses at once. He doesn't talk much, nor is he particularly crazy about living humans, but boy is he good with animals. Darwin is very good at respecting boundaries, so if you are interested in his services, you will have to summon him directly. Give Darwin a call by making a circle of dirt (clay, sand, silt, and loam all work), adding something your pet loves in the middle, and reading out your contract. He will soon arrive and promptly ignore you upon finding your creature. Tips number 3: For you exotic animal lovers that want to get into the hobby of magical husbandry, Marvin knows a great place to start! Phoenixes are wonderful for first time magical pet owners. They are intelligent, playful, and affectionate little birds. But be warned, molting season can get hot! Because phoenixes are fire birds, it is in their and your best interest to go with a large metal cage, preferably one twice the size of that of a medium to large conure. If this animal peaks your interest, Marvin has an offer on Phoenixes he knows you won't be able to refuse! Due to unforeseen circumstances, Marvin has found himself with 3 Phoenix chicks. They are up for adoption now (completely free, he'll even help with set up); however, you must make a blood contract tying your family to the bird for a minimum 5 generations, as phoenixes will outlive all of us and domesticated ones cannot simply be released back into the wild. If you are interested, head down to Marvin's Crittertorium and Supplies down on Aborn and Saint Clair Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM. -K. Tammerman
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOUR PET SPOKE?
A woman in Massachusetts began getting suspicious when her daughters first words were in Russian. She set up a nanny cam and found her dog had been teaching her daughter to speak in secret. The language in question? Russian. -"Cookie"
