Peta Clancy
Peta Clancy’s practice deals with issues of life, death and the body. Her works Punctures (2015-16) and Undercurrent (2019), though different in subject matter, both conceptually centre around physical and psychological scarring, how bodies and land alike carry and hold trauma.

Her process for both bodies of work is tactile and meticulous as well as violent. In Punctures, Clancy traces the natural lines in the skin and makes tiny pinprick holes from the reverse of the print, resulting in a topographical scarring on the emulsion side;
“Despite the beauty of the patterning, Clancy's markings suggest an invasion of the surface of the body from within,” (Crawford 2008, p.39).
In Undercurrent the artist physically cuts into the printed landscape and recaptures a split image onsite, revealing the invisible trauma wounds that Country holds as a result of colonial invasion and violence, specifically at Aboriginal massacre sites.

Through collaboration with the Dja Dja Wurrung community for Undercurrent, Clancy significantly exposes the colonial erasure and cover up of atrocities committed against Australia’s First Nations peoples. In discussing this work, Clancy quotes Dja Dja Wurrung traditional owner and artist Natasha Carter;
“The landscape never forgets; it holds stories and actions. Whether we build on it, dig it up, change its shape, it doesn’t change the significance of the site and what has happened there.” (Clancy 2021).
By cutting the images along the horizon line, the artist forces the audience to confront the truth that lies beneath the surface; that there is Indigenous trauma rooted in Australian society, that the land we live and work on is a graveyard and there is no erasing or escaping that fact.
