Cliffe High Street, Lewes, Pete Davies

This is a painting on linen of the Cliffe High Street, Lewes showing the original Bills restaurant and Harveys Brewery (a place I worked washing bottles when I was 19). Lewes is the town I was born in, it has changed a lot since I lived there. I wanted to capture the light on the old buildings displaying the vibrancy and liveliness of the town. I hope you enjoy it too.

Geraniums, Pete Davies

This is a painting I did to brighten up our kitchen, the flower pot is very old and belonged to my grandmother who loved geraniums so it represents longevity and renewed life.

Sailing from Byzantium, Pete Davies

The title of this nude study is a play on the words of Yeats' poem, 'Sailing from Byzantium.' I was pleased with the texture of the skin, produced by lots of layering, commencing with the underpainting in umber and a dead layer in grey tones. I struggled with the cloth at her feet in that I couldn't decide what colour to paint it. It was originally white but I went through a variety of reds until I found the colour I wanted. I wanted to recreate a painting in the style of Alma Tadema and the Pre-Raphaelites. I hope I came close.

In the Woodland Walk, Pete Davies

An oil portrait of a lady standing watching surrounded by beautiful summer flowers. I was influenced by the style of Stanley Spencer after visiting the gallery in Cookham. I am particularly pleased with the flowers that frame the figure.

Gloucester Cathedral, Pete Davies

This painting of Gloucester Cathedral was inspired by the travel poster artists of the 40s and 50s who produced brilliant work with minimal colours. I wanted to try to imitate their style and perhaps have gone some way in achieving this.

The Flower Seller, Pete Davies

M intention was to capture the lovely, sunny feeling when I met a girl selling flowers while holidaying in France. It is painted in the fine art tradition known as the Flemish technique where layers of transparent glaze up carefully built up to create a picture that can be produced in no other way. The Chinese Vermillion and Scarlet Lake used on the flowers was chosen after a precise examination of Jean de Dinteville's sleeve in Holbein's painting, The Ambassadors.
