Book 19,2017 : 'Wild Conquest' by Peter Abrahams. This book is about 'The Great Trek' of the Boers/Dutch settlers in South Africa, the displacement and conquest of the local communities leading to the fall of the Zulu nation. Sad history. Weltanschauung!
‘’From across the way someone called: ‘Wash his mouth with salt! That’ll do it!’ When you have a cut, it is bathed with salt water. They say the sting of it is good. They say it kills the pain. When your nose bleeds, you inhale salt water up the nostrils. They say it will stop the bleeding. When you have earache you bathe your ear with warm salt water. When you have a sore throat, you gargle with salt water. If your eye is inflamed and sore, salt water eases it. When you have toothache you fill your mouth with hot salt water and get it to soak into the aching tooth. If you have stomach-ache, a large mug of warm salt water is the best cure. It either drives the sickness down or brings it up.... Salt was the greatest cure-all of my childhood days. And, it nearly always worked!’’- Peter Abrahams, Tell Freedom
Book Review - Down the Rabbit Hole (Echo Falls #1) by Peter Abrahams
Welcome to Echo Falls, home of a thousand secrets. Ingrid is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or at least her shoes are. And getting them back will mean getting tangled up in a murder investigation as complicated as the mysteries solved by her idol, Sherlock Holmes. With soccer practice, schoolwork, and the lead role in her town's production of Alice in Wonderland, Ingrid is swamped. But as things in Echo Falls keep getting curiouser and curiouser, Ingrid realizes she must solve the murder on her own -- before it's too late!
2 stars: ⭐⭐
I received this as a birthday gift in high school, during a time when I was in an Alice in Wonderland phase. I was reading retellings and inspired books, and playing games like American McGee’s Alice, so it wasn’t surprising that my friend picked this for me. It definitely seemed like something that would be right up my alley.
This book is intended for readers ages 10 to 14, and at the time, I thought it was just okay. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it either. However, rereading it as an adult, I find that I don’t like it at all. It feels very basic, and I especially don’t care for the 13-year-old protagonist, Ingrid, who I found unlikable.
