I have always wanted to go to Gen Con. I remember first hearing about the great gaming convention back in the late 70s while playing D&D.
So, today I decided to check the website for the event and lo and behold I find the "Corporate Info" page. I wanted to check and see what they have listed for the history and origins of the event. I found the following;
Gen Con is a name that has been with the gaming world for over 40 years. It began as a meeting between some friends to play games in Lake Geneva, WI - thus the name Gen (Geneva) Con (Convention). Today that name lives on in the gaming industry as the place to go to experience The Best Four Days in Gaming! Currently Gen Con has licensed events in Europe (France and the UK) and Australia.
THE VISIONARY BEHIND GEN CON
Peter Adkison, founder and former CEO of Wizards of the Coast, is the owner of Gen Con, LLC. Peter purchased Gen Con from Wizards of the Coast in 2002. Gen Con is headquartered in Seattle, Washington.
Well, if you an old coot like me, you sure as hell noticed that the name Gary Gygax does not appear ANYWHERE in the history. Now, I can almost swallow that because I am sure there are legal reasons why they don't want to credit Gary (Even though he has passed away).
What I have the most trouble with is the whole "Visionary Behind Gen Con" business. Peter Adkison? Are you ***king kidding me??!! Peter is no more the "visionary" of Gen Con than I am Captain freaking Ahab! Now, if they wanted to say, "The Driving Force" behind Gen Con or something like that, no problem.
Gen Con began in 1967 as an informal gathering of wargaming enthusiasts—later termed "Gen Con 0"—at the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, home of Gary Gygax.[7][8] In 1968 Gygax rented Lake Geneva's Horticultural Hall for $50 to hold the first formal Lake Geneva Convention, also known as the Gen Con gaming convention.[9][10] Around 100 people attended. The International Federation of Wargamers, which Gygax had also co-founded, sponsored the first Gen Con.[9] Gygax met Rob Kuntz[11] and Dave Arneson[12] in August 1969 at the second Gen Con.[10][13] The main events in that era were board games and miniature wargames.[9]
Now, in 1968, when Gen Con started, I was two years old which would make Peter Adkison about six years old when Gen Con was "Envisioned"
There can only be one "Visionary" of Gen Con and that is the late, great Gary Gygax.
